Morelia amethistina
Total Length – 5m
Australia’s largest snake found from Cape York to the Whitsunday area. Found in rainforests on the Whitsunday mainland, particularly in the Conway Range.
An apex predator of birds and mammals such as possums, bandicoots and even wallabies. This species is a regular customer for snake catchers to deal with in the Whitsundays. The picture is of a small individual removed from an aviary after it that had consumed a pet Galah. Can be aggressive when cornered or handled, delivering a nasty bite with lacerations potentially requiring treatment.
