Abundant-Common – Annual migrant. Frequently feeds with, close to, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Red-necked Stints. Bill long, black, down-curved. Breeding: Rich, chestnut-red head and neck, back, underparts. Side of breast, flanks, thinly barred black. Undertail coverts white, dark spotting. Birds tend to be changing plumage at time of entering or leaving Australia. Non-breeding: Grey-brown above, white below. Broad white wing bar; white rump. Legs black. Size: 18-23cm. Juvenile: As adult non-breeding.; feathers of upperparts pale-edged. Rufous wash on breast. Voice: Loud ‘chirrup’. Habitat: Coastal, inland, mudflats; saltworks.
