Occurs in airspace above a variety of habitats. Tends to
prefer areas with large hollow-bearing trees. They typically nest in natural
tree hollows but will use artificial crevices. Forages for insects on the wing.
Partially migratory, with most southern
breeding populations migrating to northern Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia in
non-breeding period, but some remain year round, especially in northern
Australia.
