Magpie Goose
Anseranas semipalmata


Gregarious, sometimes in flocks of thousands. Feeds in
freshwater swamps, inundated grassland and dry grassland. Grubs for roots and
tubers with its strongly hooked bill. Distribution has been greatly reduced;
breeding range now mainly the flood plains of the Top End rivers, with smaller
colonies elsewhere. Was eradicated from Victoria and se SA but has since been re-introduced.
