Heron Striated (Mangrove)

Butorides striatus


A small heron, 43 – 51cm in height.

Compact body with a short neck and legs, tends to move in a hunched position.

Has a black cap which extends down nape of neck, upper mandible is grey, lower mandible and cere yellow. Rufous morph is rufous/nankeen in colour over the body with grey wings and tail; some scalloping on feathers over shoulders.

Striated Herons are found in coastal and floodplain areas, from exposed rocky coastlines, mangroves to swamp woodlands and freshwater lakes.
