Breeds on freshwater wetlands with a combination of open water for feeding and acquatic vegetation for nest building. At other times, favours large deep freshwater bodies with clear water and fish, but also congregates on large saline lakes and sheltered coastal waters. Pairs territorial when nesting , often performing energetic and elegant ritualistic displays.
