Usually seen swimming in large lakes and rivers, including
brackish estuaries, urban wetlands, where feeds on aquatic vegetation. May
forage on land adjacent to wetlands for green pick. Readily upends, duck dives
and swims briefly under water, propelled by feet with remarkable lobed fringes
to toes.
