Eastern Osprey
Pandion cristatus
Patrols coasts, inshore waters and tidal reaches of large
streams. Hunts fish by plunge diving head first until feet thrust forward at
last instant. May completely submerge, or pluck fish from the surface. Can take
off almost vertically from water carrying its catch to a feeding perch or nest,
with fish aligned in the direction of flight.
