A widespread inhabitant of freshwater lakes, rivers and
swamps, including urban wetlands. Needs dense cover in which to hide e.g. reed
beds. Forages amongst aquatic vegetation by surface gleaning and upending. Also
readily takes to land to forage on grass. Noisy with a range of harsh
shriek-like calls.
