Gregarious when not breeding, often in large daytime camps on bare ground beside suitable water. During dry season concentrates at coastal permanent wetlands in Nth Australia. Spreads out across the vast wet plains to breed during the wet season. Grasses mostly at night on grassy margins of wetlands or on short grass plains, often far from water. Swims reluctantly and rarely dives.
