Moderately common – Annual migrant.

Perches high on dead branches, hawks insects. Chunky body, stout bill, square tail. Tumbling, rolling flights shows pale blue ‘dollars’ on wings. Brown head grades to blue-green body, dull on saddle, brighter on wings, rump. Blue-violet on throat, wings, tail. Red bill, eye-ring, legs. Non-breeding: Bill less red. Size: 26-29cm. Juvenile: Duller. Lacks violet throat. Dark bill, legs. Voice: Harsh accelerating nasal yap; churring. Habitat: Woodland, watercourses.
