Common Greenshank

Tringa nebularia


Common – Annual Migrant. Tall stance (33cm), wary. Often solitary. Bobs head. In flight, extensive white rump extends up in long ‘V’; long green or dull yellow legs trail. Black bill slightly upturned, paler base. Upperparts grey, mottled black/white. White head, neck, breast, dark-streaked. Non-breeding: Paler, no black. Grey streaks on crown, upper breast. Barred underwing. Size: 30-35cm Voice: Ringing ‘tew-tew-tew’, when taking flight. Habitat: Estuaries, inland lakes, open swamps.
