Cygnus atratus


 

Occurs in pairs family groups or flocks of up to several thounsand on shallow waters across Australia, though less common in far north. Eats aquatic plants, mainly algae but also sea grasses, obtained from below the surface with its long neck or by upending. Patially nomadic in response to changing water levels and food availability.
