Tall, rhizomatous perennial sedge with terete culms, (60-) 100-200cm high by 3-10mm in diameter. Previously Schoenoplectus validus.

Flower description: Umbel like inflorescence, with branches 1-8cm long, scabrous, with one to four spikelets per branch, involucral bract much shorter than inflorescence, 2-5 cm long. Oblong-ovoid, acute spikelets, 5-11 x 4-5mm. Glumes retuse, very shortly mucronate, with ciliate margins, red brown, 3-4 mm long. Hypogynous bristles retrorsely scabrous, slightly longer than or equalling nut.

Fruit description: Oovoid, plano-convex, smooth, shining, grey brown to dark brown nut, 2-2.5 x 1.2-1.5mm.
